Anglo American has been recognised for excellence in sustainability for the 11th consecutive year and as mining industry leader for the second year running in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2013.
Delighted to be recognised again
Commenting on the achievement, Mark Cutifani, CEO of Anglo American, said the company was “delighted [to be] recognised as the mining industry leader in sustainability. He also highlighted a range of programmes that have helped Anglo American improve its sustainable development, including:
- The ECO2MAN energy and carbon management programme, which helps the mining company better understand the lower its energy consumption. According to Cutifani, this has helped reduce Anglo American’s energy use by 5% in 2012, saving US$ 75 million.
- The WETT water management tool had help reduce water usage: the company now recycles or reuses 72% of its water, with four operations now recycling or reusing 90% of their water.
- The company also have a number of programmes to engage and support host communities, including its Socio-Economic Assessment Toolbox and small business development programme.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index
Anglo American has been part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index each year since 2003, rising to Gold Class in 2010. The index follows a best-in-class approach, including companies across all industries that outperform their peers in numerous sustainability metrics. It assesses economic, environmental and social performance and includes a review of policies and performance in corporate governance, risk management, climate change, energy consumption, health and safety, supply chain standards and workplace relations, among others.
