Indonesia's January coal output slips 8 percent yr/yr

Coal production eased 8% in January to 36 million t compared with 39 million t during the same period last year, a mining ministry official has said.

Indonesian coal production in December was 35.25 million t, while exports in January were 30 million t, up from 25.9 million t in December, ministry data showed.

"Production of coal in January 2015 decline compared to January 2014 because of the price," said Gultom Guska, head of subdirectorate supervision of coal mining at the energy and mineral resources ministry.

The world's top exporter of thermal coal has set a coal production target of 425 million t this year, down from 459 million t last year.

Indonesia plans to improve quality of coal exports

The Indonesian Government has announced it intends to ban exports of low-quality coal, starting in 2014. Coal with an energy value of less than 5600 kCal/kg will no longer be exported.
