According to the National Grid Electricity System Operator, on 31 May 2019 Great Britain recorded two coal-free weeks of electricity generation in England, Scotland and Wales – the first time since the Industrial Revolution.

This landmark comes after Great Britain went eight days, 1 hour and 25 minutes without coal on 9 May 2019.

Since 1882, coal has been used for electricity generation in Great Britain, when a power plant opened in Holborn (London).

In 2018, coal made up just 5% of Britain’s electricity generation, a significant decline from approximately 40% in 2012.
