New technologies offer improvements to mining and power industries

World Coal,

Rexnord has launched its Falk forged fabricated gear sets, which offer a variety of industrial applications in the mining, cement, power generation and paper industries. The gear sets are engineered specifically for custom mill, kiln and dryer applications that require gear sets under 24 ft in dia.

In a statement, the company said the gear sets offered a number of benefits to customers.

The combination of the gear rims and pinions being forged with no pattern requirements means that the forged fabricated gear sets are reduced in cost. There are also shorter lead times, with shipping occurring from 17 weeks after an order has been placed, thus addressing emergency breakdown situations.

The gear sets are designed using the American Gear Manufactures Association (AGMA) standards and have a three-year warranty.

William Quinn, business development lead, Mill Products at Rexnord, said “We’re seeing an increased need in the marketplace for these types of gear sets. Our gear sets are forged into gear rims and pinions from medium carbon and alloy steels for metallurgical soundness and structural integrity. The gear rims and pinions are forged from the start, [rather than forming gear rims from flat steel plates].”

Quinn said this technique avoided creating gear sets with non uniform properties, which would compromise the performance of the product.

New technology improves separation of ultrafine coal particles from water

A new technology that could help release some of the currently unusable energy in an estimated 2 billion t of US coal waste has been successfully demonstrated by a Department of Energy (DOE) supported project. The hyperbaric centrifuge technology is aimed at separating the fine coal particles from water, allowing their recovery for energy, and marks a step forward in clean coal separation.
