The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) has announced its keynote session for next year’s SME Annual Conference & Expo, which will take place in Denver from 15 – 18 February.

The keynote session will tackled the theme “The Mine of the Future: Forecasting Opportunity and Challenges for the Global Mining Industry” with speakers from Freeport-McMoRan, Caterpillar and Arch Coal already confirmed.

“Taken as a whole, the international mining industry is softening as the global economy expands at a more moderate pace and mine capacity may have outstripped demand in the short term,” SME said in a press release. “However, in the individual mining sectors of coal, industrial minerals and aggregates, opportunities await for smarter companies that re meeting their own domestic and international challenges by opening new markets, creating new products, cutting costs and improving efficiencies.”

Confirmed speakers include Richard Adkerson, president and CEO of Freeport McMoRan, Christopher Curfman, vice president of the mining sales and support division at Caterpillar, John Eaves, president and CEO of Arch Coal and Barry Hudson, director of aggregates Northern Europe at HeidelbergCement.
