Arch Coal, Inc. have announced that eight outstanding high school graduating seniors were chosen as 2017 Arch Coal Scholars. Each student will receive a US$2000 annual scholarship for up to four years to attend an accredited college or university of their choice.

"We are pleased that we can recognise and reward the achievements of our employees' children through the Arch Coal Scholars programme," said John W. Eaves, Arch Coal's chief executive officer. "This long-running program allows us to play a small role in providing quality educational opportunities in the areas where we operate as well as support a new generation of leaders. The 2017 class of Arch Coal Scholars reflects high academic achievement, outstanding community service and a dedication to furthering their skillsets and knowledge base. We congratulate them on their accomplishments thus far and wish them great success as they work toward their higher-education goals."

The Arch Coal Scholars programme is open to children of eligible employees of Arch Coal and its subsidiaries. Recipients are selected based on academic record, leadership, and participation in school and community activities. A statement of education and career goals, a work history and an outside appraisal also are included in the application.

Scholarship America, the country's largest private sector scholarship and educational support organisation, administers all aspects of the Arch Coal Scholars programme, including the independent selection process.

The Arch Coal Scholars programme has provided four-year scholarships to more than 300 high school graduates since it began in 1989. Arch Coal also supports educational excellence through its annual Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Awards programme in West Virginia and Wyoming.
