The Cordero Rojo mine in northeastern Wyoming is celebrating the shipment of its one billionth short t of coal. The mine, which is owned by Cloud Peak Energy, sold about 26.5 million short t of coal in 2013, making it the third largest mine in the US by production.

“Achieving the 1 billion short t milestone is a testament to the hard work and strong focus on safe and responsible production by Cordero Rojo Mine’s employees,” said Colin Marshall, Cloud Peak Energy’s president and CEO. “Cordero Rojo will continue to play an important role in U.S. coal production well into the future.”

Since 2005, the mine has paid more than $1 billion in taxes and royalties to federal, state and local entities.

Started in 1976 by Sun Oil Co., the Cordero mine shipped just over 10 000 short t in its first year of operation. In 1997, the Cordero Mine merged with Caballo Rojo mine to create the current Cordero Rojo mine. Since merging the two mines, the complex has historically produced over 35 million short tpa.
