Patriot Coal has laid of 75 workers at two West Virginia mines, according to a report from Associated Press: 60 miners at the company’s Wells mining complex and 15 at the Corridor G mine.

Although another blow to the Appalachian coal industry, the move does not come as a surprise. In April, the company issued a 60 day layoff notice to workers at both locations as required under the federal WARN Act.

The Appalachian coal industry has been hit particularly hard by the current weakness in the US coal industry. According to SNL Energy, employment at Central Appalachian coal mines dropped 13.8% in Q1 of this year compared to the same period in 2013. In Southern Appalachia, the drop was over 15%.
