Glencore Xstrata closes Newlands Northern underground coal mine

Continuing a spate of coal mine closures in Australia, Glencore has announced that it is to close its Newlands Northern underground coal mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, when it reaches the end of its mine life in Q4 2015. Development activities will stop at the end of June 2014 after the final longwall has been set up.
The end of development work at the mine will result in the loss of about 50 jobs, the company said in a statement. Production will continue until the final volumes of coal have been extracted from the remaining longwalls.
The Newlands Northern underground coal mine is part of the of the NCA complex, which also includes the Newlands and Collinsville opencast mines and the Abbott Point coal terminal. The project is a joint venture with Itochu Coal Resources and Sumitomo. The underground mine produced 2.75 million t of coal last year.
Glencore owns 12 mining complexes across Queensland and New South Wales, producing 80 million t of thermal and metallurgical coal in 2013 and employing about 8600 people. The company recently suspended operations at its Ravensworth coal mine due to lower prices, high production costs at the mine, a strong Australian dollar and geological constraints in future mining areas.
