Restoration of a long-idled Alaskan coal plant

After 20 years of failings and disagreement, Golden Valley Electric Association intends to restart a long-idled coal-fired power plant, in Healy, Alaska. It is one of two Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA) coal-fired power plants and was previously recognised as the Healy Clean Coal Plant. It is expected to commence operation on 27 May. The plant will see major upgrades, such as US Environmental Protection Agency required emissions system.
According to Mike Wright, Vice President of Transmission and Distribution, GVEA, the power output of the plant will supplant higher price natural gas and oil-fired electricity generation sources but is unlikely to drastically affect customer bills. Wright also said that concern over federal carbon dioxide emissions standards may lead to the closure of the other Healy plant.
