SaskPower, which operates the first commercial-scale carbon capture and storage facility at a coal-fired power plant, has opened its next step in supporting development of the technology: its Carbon Capture Test Facility (CCTF) in Esteven, Saskatchewan, in Canada.

Speaking at the opening of the CCTF, Mike Marsh, President and CEO of SaskPower, highlighted the need for a range of energy sources to meet growing demand for power "in a way that balances affordability, reliability and sustainability".

?CCS is part of that mix," Marsh continued. "SaskPower is a pioneer in this technology and we benefit from working with world technical leaders in this new facility to stay on the cusp of new and efficient CCS developments.”

The CCTF was developed in partnership with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and with CAN$1.3 million of funding from the Canadian federal government through Natural Resources Canada’s ecoENERGY Technology Initiative. Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems will also be the facility’s first client, testing its new amine solution.

“Our government is truly proud to have supported this innovative project,” said Ed Komarnicki, MP for Souris-Moose Mountain, who represented the Canadian federal government at the opening. “This world-class facility will allow companies from across Canada and around the global to develop and test the next generation of CCS technology, improving environmental performance and growing our economy.”
