More than 100 companies, research and educational institutions from across Europe have joined together under the patronage of the European Union to form the EIT Material consortium.

The consortium wants to change the difficulties of raw materials dependence into a strategic strength for Europe. It aims to develop and enhance the sustainability, growth and competitiveness of natural resources projects in Europe, as well as making them more environmentally beneficial and socially accepted.

An example of an innovative project some of the consortium partners are involved in is the EU-program Horizon2020, which focuses on the development of new methods for in-situ mining of metals.

This is reported to include primary deposits, secondary raw material resources (such as waste dumps), new recycling processes and the replacement of critical raw materials.

A consortium core partner is DMT, global specialist service provide at all stages of the raw material cycle. Norbert Benecke, DMT's Project Manager for the EIT Raw Materials, commented: "We are especially committed to the introduction of innovative and sustainable products, processes and services … This unique cooperation of so many leading companies, research institutes and universities from the natural resources sector in a network of excellence also offers us new possibilities and opportunities to enhance our own innovative strength, market presence and competitiveness."

Further steps for the consortium will include being involved with a coordination centre for the development of natural resources projects specifically in Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as innovative technology projects in cooperation with major European mining companies.
